Evan Arnold

Obituary of Evan Arnold

It is with heavy hearts that the family of Evan Lyell Arnold announce his passing on January 20, 2011 after a courageous battle with cancer. He has gone home to be with the Lord. Leaving behind to mourn and celebrate his wonderful life are his son David and wife Elaine Arnold of Chatham and his daughter Amy and husband John Hogg of Calgary. Dear grandfather of Chris Arnold and wife Deb of Chatham, Lori and husband Rick Schellekens of Winnipeg, Sarah and Logan Hogg of Calgary, Dan McFadden and wife Shelly of London, Leah Morise and Mike Bourgeault of London. Evan will be fondly remembered by his 12 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and 6 step-children. He was predeceased by his first wife of over 50 years, Jessie Alfreda Arnold (McCann) in 1997, their infant son Joel Scott Arnold in 1956 and his second wife, Evelyn Arnold (Perrier) in 2009. Evan was born June 25, 1921 on the family farm in Kent County and was the son of the late Lyell and Lauretta (Pugh) Arnold. There he resided, farmed, lived, laughed and loved until his death. He was a well-respected man of the community. Over the years, Evan served on countless agricultural, school, library and hospital boards. He also served as Deputy Reeve of Chatham Township for two years. He was honoured by the Government of Canada, with a medal in 1967 for his “valuable service to the nation”. During “retirement” he volunteered to grow gladiolas for the Golden K Kiwanis as a fund raiser. For 5 years, they sold blooms and were able to donate over $8000.00 to the children’s ward at the local hospital. His retirement was also filled with wonderful trips across the globe, cruises, shuffleboard and time with the family. One highlight for him, during this time, was his induction to the Kent Agricultural Hall of Fame. Evan was a life long member of the Louisville Baptist Church, and since 1977, a proud member of the Gideons. His love and devotion to God helped him get through life’s trials. Evan was a loving, caring, thoughtful family man who will be greatly missed by everyone who had the honour and pleasure of knowing him. Family and friends will be received at the Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair St. Chatham on Sunday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Funeral Service to celebrate Evan’s life will be held in the Funeral Home on Monday, January 24, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. with Pastor Kent Babbey officiating. Interment Arnold Cemetery, Louisville. Memorial donations to honour Evan’s life can be made to the Gideons or the Canadian Cancer Society and would be appreciated by the family.
