Obituary of Grant 'Smitty' Smith

SMITH: Grant E. “Smitty” A resident of Chatham, and formerly of the 12th Concession, Chatham Township, Grant Smith passed away peacefully at his home on November 30, 2009, at the age of 88. Loving husband of Blanche (Starks) Smith of 63 years. Born on April 18, 1921 in Chatham Township, son of the late Clarence & Nellie (Richardson) Smith. Survived by brother Bev Smith of Detroit, Michigan, and brother in-law Raymond Starks and his wife Jean of London. Uncle and great uncle to a host of nieces and nephews. Predeceased by sisters in-law Hazel (Starks) Handsor and Etta Mae Smith, and niece Bonnie (Handsor) Robbins. Grant was employed at Navistar International for 32 years where he was well known as “Smitty”. He was also a longtime member, Deacon, and Sunday school teacher at the Community of Christ Church of Chatham. Until his health took over, Grant was an avid golfer and calligraphist. He enjoyed sharing his wealth of knowledge and wisdom to whom ever he came into contact with. Family will receive friends, at the Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham, on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 from 3:00-5:00 p.m. & 7:00-9:00 p.m. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2009 at 1:00 p.m. from the Funeral Home. Interment to follow at Dresden Cemetery. Donations made in memory of Grant to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or the charity of one’s choice are welcomed and appreciated by the family. Grant has left us with great memories and a legacy of service to God. Those of us who loved him thank God for his life and all that he meant to us. He has shown us all how to live with unwavering faith, love, courage, and integrity.
