Obituary of Louise Maxfield

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Dr. Judith “Louise” Maxfield of Ridgetown. Louise passed away with her daughter Kyla by her side at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance on November 13, 2023, at the age of 75.

She was born in Westcliff on Sea, England, to the late Thomas Futcher and Veronica Retallack. When she was a baby, they immigrated to Ontario Canada. She graduated from the University of Waterloo. In her 20’s Louise moved to British Columbia where she fell in love with the mountains. After raising her family, she returned to Ontario to attend Lakehead University in Thunder Bay to get her Master’s degree. She didn’t stop until she finished her Ph.D.

Louise enjoyed her career of helping others as a clinical psychologist who was a leader in the field of EMDR, an author, and a journal editor. She received multiple awards for both research and academic excellence. She was delighted to speak at numerous conferences. She was the founding editor of the Journal of EMDR Practice and Research. She was immensely proud of the journal and her work in the EMDR community.

Shortly before retiring, Louise moved to Ridgetown, Ontario. Retiring gave her more time to enjoy her hobbies. Some of Louise’s many hobbies included painting, photography, and reading books. She greatly enjoyed being outside, spending time by the water, walks with her dog, and spending time with family. She spent countless hours studying genealogy and working on the family tree. She also enjoyed her book clubs and the time she spent at the Ridgetown Senior Center.

Louise was a cherished mother to Jennifer Harris (Chad Harris), Kyla Zagnoev (Jared Zagnoev), Isaac Maxfield (Angel Desjarlais), and her sweet dog Gracie. She was a proud Grandma to Brianna and Ryan Harris. She is survived by her sister, Jane Futcher; and niece, Haleigh Hutchinson. Her sisters, Verity Futcher and Hilary Hutchinson, predeceased her in death.

The family would appreciate donations made in Louise's honor to the Canadian Cancer Society.

All are welcome to attend her burial and service at the Evergreen Cemetery in Blenheim on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at 1:00 p.m.
