One of the exciting, and terrifying, adventures my dad was involved in. I'm glad no officers were hurt in this incident. I sometimes wish I knew more about my father's life as a homicide detective. For obvious reasons it wasn't really something he wished to share too much, at least with young kids. I am really enjoying hearing from others who spent time with him. Things my dad and I shared in common were puzzle solving (logic puzzles especially), horror and sci-fi movies and tv shows, and a dark sense of humour. Rest well Dad.

Harry Cole, Waterdown,On. I had the pleasure of working uniform patrol in 13 Division with Barry when we were both PC’s. One significant event stands out in my memory about Barry’s dedication and determination. We were both working midnights in separate squad cars. I was solo and Barry had a young recruit as a partner, when near the end of our shift a radio call described a wanted vehicle involved in the injuring of 2 officers..Barry who had driven stock cars as a young man, spotted the wanted car and a pursuit ensued with Barry hot on the tail of the wanted vehicle, he pursued it using due care and attention at high speeds during rush hour. During the pursuit, the bolt holding the passenger side of this bench seat broke, causing the passenger section to flounce around. The pursuit ended successfully and the suspect arrested however the first thing Barry’s young escort did was kiss the ground once he got out of the car.

We are so sorry to hear about Barry passing. Over the last couple of years we spent time with Barry and chatted on the phone many times We had lunch and supper together several times at Barry's favourite restaurants - Smitty's and Boston Pizza. We celebrated our birthdays, most recently Barry's in June, and Sharon's in July. Barry was a nice man and he will be missed. Our condolences to the family from Barb's sisters.

As the brother of Barry, I attended his and others retirement dinner (in 1989, the dinner speaker was Julian Fantino. Later in the ceremony I asked him if he felt reasonably financially comfortable in retirement? He replied that at some time he might have to pump gas but felt he was just burned out with the force and had to leave. I told him our company was looking to hire a fork lift truck driver to unload tractor trailers delivering materials to our plant in Aurora. He replied he didn’t know how to drive one, to which I said he would be taught. Barry started with us 3 days after his retirement from the Force. By the end of his first day at Fulton, it appeared as if he had been driving a lift truck for years. Over the next four years he was transferred to the parts department and then into the boiler service division. This was of course with a number of training sessions in the main Fulton Boiler Works plant in Pulaski, NY. In 1991 Fulton had designed, developed and marketed a new “Pulse Combustion” Hot Water Boiler for sale to the North America commercial markets. Essentially the Pulse Combustion concept was based upon the German V1 Rocket (Buzz Bomb) developed in 1944 for WW2 for the bombing of England. Barry was selected to train on the Fulton product in USA and eventually. became an outstanding technician with Fulton. Barry chose to re-retire in 2002 and relocate to Windsor. RIP my dear brother, you will be missed. Perhaps we will meet again at that big fishing hole on the other side.

What can I say about Barry? Our family met him in 2013 at Christmas time as he accompanied Barb our cousin. He was quiet until he got to know us. He was a sweet man who always enjoyed all of the dinners I invited the two of them to. Barry would regale us with a few of his "Cop" days stories which we thoroughly enjoyed hearing! After Barb passed we continued to include him in all family get togethers as he was and always will be part of the family. We are heartbroken over the loss of such a great man. You fly with angels now Barry. R.I.P. I've included a picture from our first meeting to one of our last.

Felicia, You and Bill are family to him. I know that he loved the two of you with his whole heart. I will personally be forever grateful to both of you for your support through all of this. Felicia, I don't think I could have gotten through this without you. You are an angel and will forever be a part of my heart.

So very sorry to hear that Barry has passed away. I never had a chance to meet him but my very good friend Barb Ernteman Hopkins spoke very highly of him and I know she thought the world of him. On behalf of the 300 members of the Toronto Police 31 Division Alumni, we wish to pass on our condolences to Barry's family. As policemen much of our job was behind the scenes in the preparation of a case and the laying of charges. All of this required a mass of knowledge of the law in order to process an offender properly that the victims were satisfied that justice had been done and not just a slap dab job put together case whereby any lawyer could have the matter disposed of to his clients favour quickly. Barry Kluey was a very learned Detective, probably one of the best in the knowledge of the criminal code that no room was ever left for an accused to wriggle out of the charges against him. Barry didn't need the three piece suit to show off his skills his conviction record stood like no other Detectives. On top of that, Barry was a very compassionate man. Often dealing with first time offenders who were barely an adult, he would frequently call the parents give the accused a good talking to and send them home. There is many a lad out there who did something stupid and who can be very thankful to Barry for the rest of their lives. Barry was also one of the nicest men to socialize with, he had a contagious laugh when telling tales and how can those who worked with Barry ever forget when he would load up the "D" Office boom box with a selection of "Pink Floyd at a surprising level of volume. So long Barry we will all miss you. Harry .

I have to admit that although I don't recall ever having met Barry, I do recognize the name from my service with the Toronto police, and so I wanted to extend my condolences to his family and many friends. I have a very fond memory of Barry in the years he worked at 31 Detective office. As a young rookie, I remember the first time I approached him while sitting in his desk in the corner of the office to tell him of my arrested person. He looked at me and said,”You tell me what you think you got and I will tell you what you got.” Years later while working in the Detective office on the same shift, he taught me about two dollar night. My condolence’s to the family.
