Obituary of Gary Joseph Benninger

BENNINGER: Gary Joseph - A lifelong resident of Chatham, Gary Benninger passed away at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Chatham Campus on Saturday April 18, 2020 at the age of 74. Born in Chatham and raised in Prairie Siding, he was the son of the late Albin (1996 )and Rosina Benninger (Becker) (2006).  

Beloved husband to Heather Benninger (Hyatt).  Loving father to Tracy Callaghan and husband Jim of Chatham, Jason Benninger of Chatham, and Step father to Wade Brackenbury and wife Kandice of Ajax, Darren Brackenbury of Tilbury, and Nicole McCutcheon and spouse Chris Debot of Chatham.  

Proud Grandfather to Destiny Johnson (Pailey)  and husband Justin Johnson, Justin Callaghan and partner Hanne Goetz, Cameron Callaghan, Brady Benninger, Quentin and Kaprice Brackenbury,  Ty and Brooke McCutcheon, Chelsea and Conner Debot, and Great grandfather to Jemma Johnson and baby Johnson on her way. 

Also predeceased by his brother Eugene Benninger and his wife Theresa Benninger (Duephette).  He will be missed by his nieces, nephews, friends, neighbours and extended family as well. 

Gary retired in 2008 after 42 years working in manufacturing on the line, in quality control and as a supervisor for Rockwell, OES, and Siemans.  

Gary played and umpired for Maple City Slo Pitch for many years, volunteer for Chatham Youth Bowling Council in his earlier years, loved to golf, had his regular spot at the arena to watch the Chatham Maroons, and volunteered at Chatham Outreach for Hunger.  

From coffee shops to baseball diamonds, hockey areas, pick ups and drop offs for grandkids, he was always willing to give a helping hand.  His funny laugh, sense of humor, and his kind and gentle heart will be remembered and treasured forever. 

A special thank you to Chatham Kent Health Alliance staff on the CCC ward for their kindness over the months and to Dr. Zeke Milkovic for supporting us in his cardiac recovery.  

A Celebration of Life will be live streamed at 11:00am on Saturday, July 4, 2020 through the www.mckinlayfuneralhome.com website. 

In lieu of flowers, donations made in memory of Gary to Chatham Outreach for Hunger would be appreciated.
