Obituary of Michael Calyn

Calyn, Michael

A resident of Chatham, Michael Calyn passed away and has gone home to be with Jesus in his 85th year. 

Born September 15 1934, he was the son of the late Peter Calyn & Anastasia Chrysalawati and raised by his foster parents, Anastasia & Emil Czorny.

Married July 9, 1960, beloved husband of 58 years to Ruth (nee Erkila). 

Devoted father of Kathy Perry and her husband Paul of Chatham, and David Calyn of North Carolina.

Grandfather of Jonathan, Heather, Lucas & Curtis Perry.

Predeceased by his siblings, Ann, John & foster sister, Valentina. 

Remembered by his brother-in-law, Allan Erkila, Linda Reid and her husband Randy, & Roy Erkila and his wife Shirley. 

Missed by his nieces & nephews, the late Shirley Emberg, Wayne Kostiuk, Gladys Grosh, Debbie Kostriuk, Barry Kostriuk, & Joanne Weston. 

Michael retired as a Mechanic Supervisor from the Ministry of Transportation after 36 years of Service. First and foremost, Michael loved the Lord. He was an avid singer in many quartets & choirs. He enjoyed gardening his flowers & vegetables, hunting & fishing.  He had a very kind heart and would commonly be referred to as a gentle giant. He was a devote husband, father, grandfather, brother & friend. He always would give his time & talents to any one who may have needed it. For over 40 years, he was the best friend and caregiver of his wife Ruth. Ruth & himself could often be found at their cottage in Manitoulin Island. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends in Chatham, Sudbury, Lakeland, Florida and Manitoulin Island.

Family to receive friends on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 from 6:00 - 9:00 pm at McKinlay Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham. A Funeral Service will take place on Wednesday at Evangel Community Church, 79 Sandys Street, Chatham at 11:00 am. Cremation to follow with interment on Manitoulin Island.
