Obituary of Betty Thorpe-Cowan

Thorpe - Cowan, Betty June (nee McClellan)

A resident of Chatham, Betty Thorpe - Cowan passed away surrounded by family at the Chatham-Kent Hospice on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 in her 93rd year.

Betty was the daughter of the late John & Mabel (nee Merrit) McClellan. 

Beloved wife of the late John William Thorpe (1993) & the late Louis Samuel Cowan (2003). 

Loving mother of Kaye & Fred Lee of Ridgetown and David & Diane Thorpe of Calgary, Alberta. Step-mother of Bruce & Mary Cowan, Parry Cowan, the late Paul Cowan and the late Mark Cowan.

Grandmother of Jason (Carrie) Thorpe, Kathryn Thorpe, Darcy (Candice) Thorpe. Step-grandmother of P.J., Mark (Carolyn), Jeffery (Sara), Jonathon (Jennifer), Chad (Dawn), Michelle, Sean, Greg (Ann) and the late Todd.

Great-grandmother of Ryan, Ty & Michael Thorpe. Step-great-grandmother of 17 with special mention of Rosina, Foxx, Reece & Elliot. 

Sister of Alta & the late Ross Fisher, John & Marie McClellan, the late Bertha & Charlie Eastcott, the late Ada & Bill Brown and the late Carol McClellan. 

Sister-in-law of the late Henry & Dorothy Prout and the late Bill & Madeline Mason. 

Survived by step-daughter-in-laws, Linda Cowan and Tish Cowan.  

Missed by many nieces, nephews & extended family.

The Thorpe-Cowan family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff & volunteers of the Chatham-Kent Hospice and the staff of the Chatham Retirement Resort. A heartfelt thanks to Rev. Michael Maroney for his constant support and friendship with Mom. 

Betty was an avid golfer and traveler to many places including England to see her pen pal of 80 years, Lorna Creasey. She was an extremely positive influence for all to be around, a great listener and always gave the best advice. Betty followed closely the lives of her grandchildren & great-grandchildren. 

Friends to be received on Saturday, July 28, 2018 at McKinlay Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham from 10:00 am until the Memorial Service at 12:00 pm with Rev. Michael Maroney. Cremation has taken place. Interment will be in Dresden Cemetery on Monday, July 30, 2018 at 10:00 am. Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the Funeral Home for 9:15 am to proceed to the cemetery for the interment.

Donations in memory of Betty may be made to the Chatham-Kent Hospice Foundation, Canadian Cancer Society or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
