Jeanne Beattie

Obituary of Jeanne M. Beattie

BEATTIE: Jeanne Marguerite (Rose) -

On Saturday, May 26, 2018 at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance, Chatham Campus, Jeanne Beattie passed away with her family and a dear friend at her side.

Jeanne was predeceased by her beloved husband Bill (1991); father Lloyd and mother Jean (Jenner) Rose and by her sister Glynne and her husband Glenn Slade. Her memory will be treasured by her daughter Laurie Beattie (Jim Saloman) and her granddaughter Elizabeth Beattie-Saloman. She was a special aunt to Doug Slade (Lynn) and Paul Slade (Carol Ann) and their children. Jeanne was fortunate to have a number of close and supportive friends, particularly Deanna and Bob Ryan and Julie and Tom Mountain and Doug Dolsen. She is survived by her sisters-in-law Helen Gopelle, Dorothy Beck and Patricia Beattie (late Albert) and their families.

Jeanne was born in Blenheim on March 10, 1929 and lived there until she left for the University of Western Ontario in London in 1946. She found that she enjoyed socializing more than classes so left at the end of her second year to join London Life. At university she met Bill; they married in 1950 and had forty happy years together.

Jeanne was an avid reader of fiction, especially mysteries, a lover of lists and was known as companionable and a good listener.

Jeanne and Bill shared two passions: travel and golf. Travel started simply enough as the annual marathon car trip and when they had exhausted North America they headed off the continent. Their first trip was an unusual choice - South America - and then they spent many years exploring Europe, where they developed a taste for wine with their evening meals. Both Jeanne and Bill had golfed in their youth and re-established the hobby at Blenheim Country Club and golfed there for a number of years. Jeanne later joined the nine-hole Ladies League at Countryview, where she met and enjoyed time with new and old friends, spending at least twenty more years following the white ball.

Jeanne and Bill were old school - many of their neighbours when they lived on Canterbury Street and Emerald Place became close and valued friends.

Our family would like to express its gratitude to the staff at Chatham Retirement Resort. We will also always remember and appreciate the thoughtful and compassionate care of Jeanne provided by the ICU doctors, nurses and staff at the Chatham-Kent Hospital.

Family will receive friends at McKinlay Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham on Saturday, June 2, 2018 from 12:00 pm with the Funeral Service at 1:00 pm with Bob McCall officiating. Cremation will follow with a private family interment to be held at Maple Leaf Cemetery at a later date.

Donations may be made in memory of Jeanne to the Arthritis Society, Canadian Cancer Society or Heart and Stroke Foundation.
