Obituary of J. Gordon Kirkwood

KIRKWOOD: A resident of Chatham, formerly of Tillsonburg (Hickory Hills), Thunder Bay and Windsor, Gordon died at Victoria Residence on Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at the age of 87 years. Born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, son of the late John and Jessie (Ross) Kirkwood. Gordon is survived by his wife Marion (Geizer) Kirkwood (Residence on the Thames, Chatham), daughters Karen Kirkwood-Whyte and husband Rob of Chatham and Pat Halverson and husband Roy of Port of Newcastle and son, Kent and partner Darlene of Newmarket. Brother of the late Alan and his wife Margaret of Stouffville and the late Kenneth and his wife Mary of Toronto. Dear grandfather of Wendy (McLaren) Chappus and husband Mark of Chatham, Blake Halverson of Port of Newcastle and Jessie and Mike Kirkwood of Newmarket. Loving great-grandfather of Trent and Kennedy Chappus of Chatham. Also survived by nieces Kristyn, Deb and Marissa and nephew, David, brother to Brian who passed away August 31, 2005. Gordon was a graduate of the University of Michigan (Civil Engineering), worked at Canadian Bridge Company in Windsor and Hawker Siddley (Canadian Car Division) in Thunder Bay. He concluded his working career as Chief Building Official for the City of Thunder Bay and then retired to Tillsonburg where he became actively involved in St. Paul’s United Church and Tillsonburg Little Theatre. Gordon was also Past Master of Garden Lodge #641, Windsor. Family will receive friends at the McKinlay Funeral Home, 459 St. Clair Street, Chatham on Sunday from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. The Funeral Service, officiated by Pastor Phil Harris of Gregory Drive Alliance Church will be held at 1:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home on Monday, December 12, 2005, with refreshments to follow in the Reception Centre at the Funeral Home. Cremation, followed by interment, will be conducted at a later date. Donations to United Way of Chatham-Kent for the Kirkwood Family Fund would be greatly appreciated. Funds, in memory of Gordon Kirkwood, will be used to assist with the construction of a miniature United Way Building in the Chatham-Kent Children’s Safety Village.
